Hopefully this thread is not about whether we like or dislike Tolle. Hopefully it is about which bits of his teachings are true and which bits are false.
I'm currently reading A New Earth and have been making quite a few notes. Mostly where he says something outrageously false and I feel compelled to exorcize my brain of such nonsense. The first chapter was horrendous.
I'll post up more specific details when I'm at home. For now; it's stuff like when in chapter 3 he says most love is want, in Spanish they have 2 ways to say I love you, one also means I want you, whereas the other purely means I love you. He then says 'possibly because that other kind of love is so rare'.
'Possibly' fuck off Tolle, there are an infinity of possibilities. The fact is he expects most readers will not notice his use of possibly and just run through the book accepting such wild speculation as fact. When you are arguing for something you should avoid such speculative discussion if you expect to be taken seriously by anyone intelligent. And, that is just one of literally thousands of examples of Tolle talking shit. I suppose much of what I'm pointing out won't have bothered the Oprah audience that he is clearly writing for.
Still I think I will get a lot out of his text overall because by engaging with the subject matter I'm sorting the good eggs from the bad eggs. And at the end I'll make myself a nice Tolle omelete. Should be plenty to go around if anyone wants some.
Peace,
kowalski
