I wear random scarves, hats and other individual items and always have done. I did / do it because I think they look cool. Not to demonstrate my survival value. Therefore, it is not peacocking.
Also, I have been in a situation where someone was standing nearby analysing m e chatting to a girl for the education of a newbie. We could both hear what they were saying and even though they were using community terminology she understood well enough. It's like when you read A Clockwork Orange, as soon as Anthony Burgess uses some term you know what it means because of the context. Suffice to say I didn't get anywhere with that girl.

Hmm, well it might not have been the term I used at the time, but the idea was the same; you look cool to stand out, you stand out to be different, you want to be different to be noticed, and are technically still doing this for the same reason; you are still demonstrating survival value, regardless.
In any case, it was something I did naturally, changing my way of doing so depending on however I changed myself...
