Remember the Americans are a strange puritanical sexually confused bunch.
It's a culture with a collective madonna/whore complex that runs pretty deep. 99% of women in american media are one or the other and dude characters are set up to lust for (but respectfully resist) the latter and nobely bend over for endure and yield to the former.
That this might be a wholely flawed way to approach women, sexuality and relationships is an idea that very little american media has the intellectual capacity or will to engage with.
So while 'comedy' built on this dynamic might leave us Brits and Europeans scratching our heads and wondering if this bloke is a faggot, Americans will be laughing at the sight of a 'regular joe' while he struggles to do the 'right thing' which according to their culture is a rejection of 'sexual temptation' even in the most comedic ludircous and implausable of circumstances.
