Default Member level - 17-09-2009, 05:09 PM

Hey Admin,

Now that I've killed 1,000 posts, can I pick my own personalised member level tag like 'Philosopher King' or a generic one for all people when they hit this glorious milestone like 'Uber Member'?

Peace,

kowalski

There should be one at 500 too!

Yeh we thought about about this.

It was either member levels or a thanks system. I think the thanks system works better.

Allow me to explain: The reason we would use either would be to encourage people to post. With a members level system, you may get people just posting one line answers, introductions section hello's and what not. Just to get there status higher.

With the thanks system, you get credit for the quality of your posts rather than the quantity. Also we may start to (and im i am not saying we would get it here) get elitism happening or perceived elitism anyway. Me and Tw1sted are talking about implementing a new system, where status may be applied by the amount of thanks rather than posts, but its a contentious issue. We would have to limit the amount of thanks people can give out, so thanks are not just handed out for fuck all.

Anyway, we do appreciate all the hard work you guts, especially Kowalski have put into the forum, so nuff respect.

Surely not Jaz! I can't imagine anyone who was a member putting up meaningless posts just to get to be a senior member :cough: Jynx :cough: :cough:

I personally think elitism is a good thing. No-one can be elite at everything but nearly everyone can be the elite at something. I remember in The recent American election Obama was accused of being elite, like that was a bad thing. Because what you really want to run your country is an averagely dumb yank! Really America! Surely you want the elite in the top jobs.

I guess whatever system you use people will try to take advantage of it. Another site I used to post on before this place was built had a complex kudos system. You earned points for posting that you could give out in chunks of 1 to 5 and it wouldn't let you give kudos to the same person twice in a row even if their contribution was awesome. It was too complex. Some, like myself, never had points because they have them all out. Others had loads just from posts. Etc.

I think our system is pretty simple and transparent. I don't think too much change is required.

I just wanted it to say 'The Philosopher King' under my name

Peace,

kowalski

I've been on forums before and wondered what their custom member levels stood for and how they achieved them.

For instance, what if someone had 'Philosopher King' and someone had 'Seduction Master'? People would find themselves wondering which is higher, and also whether one really is higher than the other, or if people just picked their own.

Even when they are clear, post count is not a great indicator as it provides no distinction between slow posters who have been around years and high posters who joined last month. Some sort of average-posts-per-month counter would solve this, but the beauty of the 'Thanks' system is that it encourages people to post quality articles and offer valuable advice. The thanks system is a win-win.

I think combining other system would only confuse the situation and clutter up the site. One of our key principles when managing this forum is the Google-esque belief that the simpler option is always the best.

Hope that answers your question.
I'd like to thank you all for bringing up your suggestions!

I just find it a constant source of amusement that the likes of me are described as a "member"...as in, like, a willy.

Just my childish sense of humour?

Probably.

In fact, if we're picking our own membership levels, can I be a "Throbbing Member" when I reach 500?
