I like this thread....

All of Adam Curtis's documentaries are great, particularly-

(from wiki)

-# 2002: The Century of the Self (BBC Four) documented how Freud's discoveries concerning the unconscious led to Edward Bernays' development of public relations, the use of desire over need and self-actualisation as a means of achieving economic growth and the political control of population. It received the Broadcast Award for Best Documentary Series and the Longman-History Today Award for Historical Film of the Year. It was released in the US through art house cinemas and was picked as the fourth best movie of 2005 by Entertainment Weekly.

and

-# 2004: The Power of Nightmares (BBC Two) suggested a parallel between the rise of Islamism in the Arab world and Neoconservatism in the United States in that both needed to inflate a myth of a dangerous enemy in order to draw people to support them. It received the BAFTA Award for Best Factual Series in 2004.[7]

They are both on google video!

-Anyone into Dawkins should search youtube for Christopher Hitchens - Hes like Dawkins except drunker, angrier and a far more charismatic speaker.
Check out the video of him on Fox news in relation to Rev Jerry Falwells death.

-Werner Hertzogs doc Grizzly Man is awesome. Its about a guy who becomes obsessed with protecting bears in Alaska. So much so that he spends months living alone with, and filming them. He is eventually killed. This may not sound too interesting but it is an incredible film about a unique individual and the behavior that drove him to his death and that of his gf.

I haven't found a link for this but if you can find it it's really worth it.

-Man On Wire. Another great doc about an obsessed man, Philippe Petit, and how in 1974 he tightrope walked between the top of the Twin Towers.

-Gonzo- The life and times of Hunter S Thompson.
Not too much about his writing in here but his life could fill 10 docs.

If you understood history then you'd realise things are a lot more complex than you make out

In our time

Melvin Bragg and guests discuss the history of ideas

Basically Melvin and a bunch of experts discuss various topics ranging from history, culture, philosophy, science and religion.
It's audio only but they've just released every single one in an archive which is loads (there's 43 in the 'A' section alone).
