Default Qatar - 2022 FIFA World Cup - Ian Holloway rant - 15-01-2011, 04:59 PM

VIDEO... Ian Holloway rants over 'crazy' Fifa plan

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway loses his temper when asked about Fifa's controversial idea to move the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to the winter.

BBC Sport - Football - Ian Holloway rants over 'crazy' Fifa plan

Qatar

Sums up my feelings entirely. I met Ian Holloway when I was on a piss-up abroad. He's a chilled out guy. He's totally on the money with this ludicrous decision by FIFA to grant the World Cup to a country which:
  • its national football team has never qualified for the World Cup, ever - yet will get a free pass as hosts of tournament
  • has a tiny population of 1.7 million
  • is ludicrously hot (45 celcius) in June, totally inappropriate weather for social football far less world-class competitive stuff
  • are one of those uptight islamic countries, which violates every goal of a PUA liberal, self-improvment and self-empowered lifestyle.
    • Let's be clear, travel to Qatar, hook up with a bird (you aren't married) and you could well end up in prision.
    • Uptight islam inappropriate for international tourism on huge scale
    • The state and religion attempts to control people's freedom of self-expression.

Holloway, what a nutter. He is right though even if he does sound like an inarticulate carrot cruncher bless him.

Qatar what a hot bed for world class football!!,....complete joke to be honest. It would seem if FIFA aren't giving the world cup to countries as tokenist gestures i.e. South Africa then countries willing to pay can buy the right to host the world cup! because I suspect that's what has really happened here.

The world cup should be hosted in countries where there is a legacy for football, i.e. passionate supporters, a decent leauge, decent stadia and home to decent players. The world cup is also a celebration and one big party on a world stage,....some party that's going to be a in a dry islamic state.

I don't wish to sound bitter because England did not win the bid. To be honest I wasn't too bothered about Englands bid, we don't have a god given right to host the world cup on the basis of having the so-called best league in the world. But common sense should prevail, the world cup should be hosted in countries where football has a genuine legacy.

Russia too I found an odd one, again I suspect some votes were bought.

The world of football has gone mad, it's driven by money and instant success, genuine and loyal supporters lose out. The game is unsustainable and it will be probably take an implosion and see 'big' teams like Liverpool, Man U etc pay a heavy price for their big spending. Football is not immune, we've seen what we once percieved as the impossible possible in the economy with some of the worlds largest banks go bust over night and first-world countries brought to their knees.

To be honest I hope it happens, it will unfortunately take the demise of a couple of big clubs for people to actually realise the extent of their greed.

At the end of the day football is only a game with the obscene money involved it is disgusting that so much money can be pumped into it when billions of people out there face a daily struggle just to survive.

Rant over.

Come on you Spurs!!

It was fear of myself that made me odd

Default More FIFA Corruption - 10-05-2011, 03:40 PM

UPDATE:
One third of the FIFA executive committee members have either been alleged to or have been already found guilty of impropriety in relation to the 2018 and 2022 bids.

Quote:
Former Football Association chairman Lord Triesman claims four Fifa members sought "bribes" in return for backing England's failed 2018 World Cup bid.
BBC Sport - Football - Triesman claims four Fifa members attempted 2018 bribes
"
Triesman's specific claims are:
- Fifa vice-president Warner asked for around £2.5m to build an education centre in Trinidad, with the cash to be channelled through him, and later wanted £500,000 to buy Haiti's World Cup TV rights for the earthquake-hit nation, again to be channelled through him;
- Paraguay's Fifa member Leoz asked for a knighthood;
- Brazil's Fifa member Teixeira asked him [Triesman] to "come and tell me what you have got for me", with the implication being that he wanted something in return for his vote;
- Thailand's Fifa member Makudi wanted to be given the TV rights to a friendly between England and the Thai national team.

The latest twist means eight executive committee members, one third of the total 24, have either been alleged to or have been already found guilty of impropriety in relation to the 2018 and 2022 bids.

Bloody love Ian Holloway. Every time I see him on the TV it is like watching a skit from The Office. Hilarious guy and always apt in what he says.
