Default Learning Java - 30-06-2011, 07:58 PM

Does anyone know a good website to teach learning to programme with Java, I don't have any experience with proper languages. Just done a bit of stuff with xhtml and css in the past.
Cheers, Drew

I have to ask first, why Java?? What is your end goal?

Android app development, I don't actually want to work as a programmer, but I'd like to have the capability. Also my step father has asked me to create a fairly simple app for him. (He is aware I don't know Java atm)
I do also need to look into php & probably sql/mysql soon, because I'm planning on setting up an e-commerce site to sell a product. (Will probably sell through e-bay as well.)

Ack sql.. Me and databases do not get along.

Your best bet in most codes is to start with introductory books, it's relatively easy to find what the highest regarded ones are. You get a better theoretical grounding and understanding of certain things rather than jumping in at the deep end.

Not that I'm any good with javascript myself, dabbler. I generally just pay people in India to do little things for me using freelance sites here and there.

I did Java programming for my degree, I never used it after that. Most programmers seem to use C++ of C#. I found vb.net the easiest to actually write programs in because there is so much information about on the net for it. SQL is fairly easy with practice (T-SQL / PL-SQL) is harder.

I'm a business analyst so I don't actually write the code I just like being able to read it and give the programmers a hard time!

Probably doesn't help answer your question...

I've been a pro java programmer for about 10 years, have probably earned about a million quid doing it but in the words of George Best ... I spent a fortune in booze cars and women ... and squandered the rest
