This is true ...

If we were allowed to add one text, one documentary, one play, one ... experience (including appropriate study of said experience) to the international curriculum -

Knee-jerk reaction what work would you have studied?
And, if you like, deeply considered response what work would you have studied?

My knee-jerk is George Orwell's 1984.
My deeply considered response ... by definition ... I will need to deeply consider that (at least for a moment).

as a knee jerk reaction i would say lateral thinking

i.e. drawing practical conclusions/solutions to problems instead of blowing minor issues out of the water with emotions.

I guess it is a difficult thing to teach with social interactions in play but for the most part, nearly all of the issues I encounter during a day happen because people are so busy trying to be right (fallacy #1) that they just fail to see a simple solution such as somebody taking their lunch 15mins early, then somebody going 15mins later etc. but then again I think fallacy #3 usually leads to people believing by not having the solution will allow their power to be usurped...

EDIT: I love the word usurped, nearly as much as regile

Hi Dan,

This thread is not encouraging you to watch Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Journey. It was more that lucidfer's post inspired me to start this thread asking what others think is inspiring enough that everyone should be exposed to it.

daleinthedark,

I do them all the time too. I love the internet because it slows down a debate long enough for you to start to notice when you are doing these things and interrupt yourself sometimes. It has been years since I selectively googled to win an argument, I caught myself doing it one day and realised how caught up I'd become, not cool and not in the true meaning of philosopher - lover of truth.

Peace,

kowalski

I think Inspiration. I don't know how you could study it as every person find inspiration in their own particular way.

Personally I get a lot of inspiration from Oscar Schindler. Yup the chap had so many flaws, he was a bit of a Del Boy who wheeled and dealed like anybody and prior to the war he was just like any Tom Dick or Harry, I bet even like most of us in this forum, just trying to take an opportunity to earn a dollar. Yet he saw something bad happening and he did something to save some of the Jews.

It just inspires me that anybody and everybody has a spark of good in them regardless and that people can and will do good in a world where you hear so much negativity...

thanks for that link. I've always tried to be unbias but its not always easy. Like you said the internet allows you to stop and view your argument but also the other person's argument.

regarding the googling, I think it is a great tool but I would assume that you have a lot of reading and knowledge in the bank and often google is a great tool for finding a particular study or journal article to quote if needed as I personally find it so hard to remember particular studies or journals...
