Lightbulb The Bystander Effect - 03-11-2009, 02:46 PM

Unrelated to pick up, but both interesting and shocking to say the least.

The Bystander Effect is a psychological phenomenon whereby when there is an emergency, the more bystanders there are, the less likely it is that any of them will actually help the casualties. Think the proverb "The Good Samaritan"

There are a few reasons to why this occurs and to why human beings can be such evil shits. Pluralistic ignorance. This is where the bystander will assume nothing is wrong because nobody else looks concerned. Audience Inhibition, the same thing that happens when you cant piss with people standing next to you. Basicaly its a fear of blunder. So if you see some person having a heart attack in the street, you would be scared to make it worse as other people are watching you. Diffusion of Responsibility, probably the most prevalent reason. When in an emergency situation with a large group of people, each individual assumes that someone else will handle the situation. The more people that are in a group, the less responsible each individual feels.

Yes human beings are sick, selfish cretures. So how do YOU avoid falling victim to this and not clam up like a little pussy. Well, do not turn to others to see what they are doing. If it is an emergency situation, take responsibility. Look at the situation and assess it as best you can from your own knowledge. Next, figure out what needs to be done and do it. If you dont, its probable that nobody else will.

And finally, take a look at this video, a prime example. Remeber what you have seen...

A perfect example of this was yesterday when some guy had broken down in the middle of the road, anyone could have helped him as he was in the way of everyone but nope!

I thought of this post as i just walked on by!!!!

i dno, perhaps some situations, its best to blend in and not jump up to help too soon, incase you come off worse...

perhaps a negative attitude in the context of pickup... but in terms of self-preservation maybe best...

Picard I love you but I have to disagree.

This sort of stuff makes me sick and I see it all the time.

Ever since I was a kid I'd always be involved with breaking up stuff, Stretford is very glamorous. Last night some of the local riff raf teenagers were throwing snow balls at cars outside my house and this old woman almost crashed her car into a lamp post. She had to park up but they started giving her abuse when she complained. I came out and lost the plot with these kids and I was close to eye gouging one of them. They got the message and pissed off.

Its why there is so much shit in our world people just don’t give a damn.

Its like the argument, oh why should I try and help that kid getting beat up, they might hurt me.

Yeah well since you're clearly living for nothing you might as well die for something…

And when it’s your kid they're doing in everyone is like - why didn’t anyone help?

Its simple, be cool.

i think you have to judge each case on its merits.

there does come a time when you have to stand up and get involved.

but often you get people, who try and get involved in any opportunity.

each their own i guess.
