What a piece of work is a man ...

"What a piece of work is a man, how noble in reason, how infinite in faculties, in form and moving how express and admirable, in action how like an angel, in apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the world, the paragon of animals." Shakespeare

Yeah, mankind is pretty awesome when you think about it.

But what is it that makes a man, specifically a male? What quality or qualities define the males of the species Homo sapiens sapiens? (Huh huh I said 'homo' huh huh huh ).
There'll be no more Beavis and Butthead references in this essay, promise.

All the cool shit we have cities, space travel, cars, televisions, mobile phones, etc. etc. Look around you ... this whole world, everything in it was, predominantly, built by men. Some will argue that there are social reasons why it is men not women that built the world, well those times are over, women have equal opportunity to create, and it's still men making all the running.

Not that women aren't awesome too, I wrote this post a while ago where I discussed some of the qualities evolution has gifted to women (http://www.puaforum.co.uk/consciousn...sychology.html). In fact you should go read it now, I'll wait for you ...

*time passes*

... Welcome back.

While females were evolving to be carers males were evolving to be hunters.

The best evidence currently available suggests that members of the genus Australopithecine were the first of our ancestors to hunt, at least 3 million years ago. Therefore, qualities essential for and related to hunting have been desirable qualities when choosing a mating partner for at least 3 million years of generations.

What qualities make the hunter?

When the men ventured out to hunt they risked their lives in the wild and they were often gone for days or weeks with little food or sleep, and be ready to strike with an explosion of energy whenever an opportunity arose. There is more to hunting, in all it's different guises, than that which I have listed. I have highlighted these factors as they're common to nearly all types of hunting and the most relative to this discussion.

In order for men to succeed and excel under the conditions of a hunt they must have a much more internal locus of control and a stronger resolve than their female counterparts required to be carers.

Men can not let their environment, comfort, other people's emotions, tiredness, hunger, being alone, unfamiliar surroundings, unpredictablity, extreme temperature, pain, or any other negative elements of their situation affect their own emotional state too greatly. They need to remain positive through whatever happens on the hunt.

Nor can men allow negative elements of their situation to affect their resolution to achieve their goal. Furthermore, they must be able to hold their resolve through whatever temptations that may arise to entice them away from achieving their goal.

Any qualities which increase your likelihood to survive and prosper are qualities that your offspring have a decent probability of inheriting, in turn helping them to survive and prosper. Because having these qualities means that there is an increased probability your children will survive, your fitness for breeding, they need to also be qualities that girls are attracted to.

The qualities required to be a great hunter have been continuously bred and re-bred into our make-up for approximately the last 3 million years of our genetic history. For that same period girls who are attracted to those qualities have been the ones whose children were more likely to survive and prosper. Therefore, both the qualities themselves and girls' attraction to them and ability to identify them in men have increased and become more deeply embedded in our psyche with each generation.

As inventivness, honesty and leadership (see http://www.puaforum.co.uk/consciousn...sychology.html), and an internal locus of control and unshakeable resolve became even more essential to our survival during the millenia when our living environment changed from jungles to plains, something very special happened. The need, caused by the massive change in our environment, to advance dramatically in these areas created a feedback loop between these qualities, their being essential for survival and attractive to potential breeding partners. This loop gathered momentum very quickly and made immense changes to our being in quite a short period of time, evolutionarily speaking. So much so that even when the levels required for our comfortable survival had been surpassed the loop continued to spin out of control and increased our abilities in these areas far beyond what is required simply for survival.

Through this process we developed the higher level of consciousness and intelligence we now have, which, coupled to our internal locus of control and steadfast resolve, drove us to build and create new technologies day after day. Resulting in all the world that we see around us now. The world that men built.
Resolve

Resolve is an extremely important factor in creation. We all have plenty of ideas. They literally cascade through our minds all the time like white water rapids. Some of these ideas are genius. Ford's idea for a motorised road vehicle, Einstein's idea that there were fundamental flaws with the Newtonian position, Edison's idea to create electrically powered lighting etc.

We all have such flashes of genius from time to time. The true measure of a man is taking one or more of these ideas and resolving to make them a reality.

Often the level of work that is involved is immense and may not be achievable within a single persons lifetime and without other advances being made by different men with their own ideas and resolve to make them a reality. The hardship, discomfort and pain that will need to be bore through may continue for many decades until your goal is achieved, if it is ever achieved at all. The temptations to give up, relax and have increased short-term decadent pleasure and comfort are innumerate, all the more so in our lazy, comfortable, modern lives.

All the many millions of men who built and created the world around us did their part. Sacrificed a little of their hedonistic enjoyment to do so. If men like had not had that resolve, if he had been distracted by the sex, drugs and general decadence that tempted him, or weakened by the voices of doubt both internal and external, or recoiled from the effort and discomfort of striving unflinchingly towards the actualisation of their ideas, we wouldn't see the same world around us as we do now. We'd live in a world of half finished buildings and tools that crumbled and failed.

Conclusion

Whatever it is that you want to achieve whether that is through change, improvement or creation you will only achieve it with a firm resolve.

This is a great measure of a man and the reason why a mans word, whether as a promise to himself or to another is such an important thing. Having rules, boundaries and ambitions that we live by and strive towards are among the most attractive qualities a man can posses, as they all require a largely internal locus of control and an unshakeable resolve.

Peace,

kowalski

Excellent stuff apart from Henry Ford's idea was for modern assembly lines used in mass production rather than the invention of the car but it doesn't matter your point still stands sorry to be a pedantic cunt

Kowalski I have to say it bro - wow - what a boring post...

So dry, so uninspiring, so regurgitated, such conjecture, so patronising....

You might just get this printed in the daily star.

Speak to my soul bro - bro, speak to my soul...

Resolve without passion is a dry well, boundaries without a foundation is an empty house, control without direction is useless.

Give me more!!!!

Adam and Dolphin,

You are so transparent.

Adam, you wrote your negative response just a few minutes after you read the bit where I tore you up for your misplaced Tyler Durden quote.

Dolphin, you wrote your negative comment just minutes after you read the bit on the shout where I took the piss out of your superstitious god loving nonsense.

... and that's all from this weeks episode of Cowboy Posters Exposed. We'll see you next week when after kowalski slaps 7aco too hard as punishment for not opening a hot chick 7aco retaliates by giving k shit for his, very cool, avatar image.

Funny fuckers.

Peace,

kowalski

Hmmm, not so sure on that one broski!

Admittedly it may have added extra spice to my post, but i’d been thinking it all day...

There is a lot of imagination in these sorts of posts and believing it and bridging the gap is, well - a leap of faith...

Like that you were opening up what it means to be a man, but it just reads so empty of depth or emotion, and its our emotions that make us human.

As humans we are capable of amazing feats that are far removed from mere basic hunting self preservation instincts - altruism, sacrifice and yes...... love.

I know you got it in you man - dont hold it back!!

Its simple, be cool.
