In my work I spend a lot of time on teleconferences.

The participants are often in reasonably noisy environments and, because phone lines have a quite limited data capacity, the compounded background noise from 15+ offices creates a horrid din and often whites-out most of the desired content.

As a rule of thumb all participants have their telephones on mute unless speaking or involved in a swift interchange.


The leader of the teleconference presents to a blank audio return. Nothing comes back.

Do people understand what you are saying? You don't know.
Are people paying any attention at all? You don't know.
Did everyone laugh at your clever little witticism? You don't know.
Not knowing how the first joke landed, should you utilise the current opportunity for a bit of recall humour? You don't know.

There is no feedback from the environment in which you are operating, whatsoever.
It can be rather unnerving.

How freely you continue to express yourself under these circumstances, I think, is conversely related to how much you need situational validation (I just made that term up to fit the discussion, I'm not positing it as an existent thing.)


For the first time in a while, on a call on Thursday, I found myself second guessing how people were reacting to me and subsequently stumbled through the end of one sentence and the start of another. When I noticed what was happening and why, I found it quite silly that the reason I fucked up my last few words was because I was occupying much of my limited human attention scope with whether I was fucking up thus leaving an insufficient remaining scope of attention to continue without fucking up.

I was glad of this final thought as the recognition of the absurdity of it all made it easy to dismiss and I continued again smoothly, as before.


This is one of the greatest things that I have gained during my time being around the PU community and has assisted me immeasurably in life in general and with my female interactions in particular - Emotional freedom from how I am being percieved.

Very interesting. Its funny how we all do this to some extent, looking for validation of the things we say and do. The less we do it the more we can truly express ourselves onto others without being attached to the outcome. And like you say the mere realization that we do this gives us freedom.
