I agree and disagree here, your reaction to this is entirely dependent on you as a person.
I struggled with reminders of a particular relationship of my past for years, then something happened, I had a moment of clarity. I started forcing every single fucking thing that reminded me of those memories on myself, I overwhelmed myself until it was numb, until no more fuck could be given.
There are two ways to do this, both involve being proactive, either make the effort to stay away from shit or make the effort to force that rubbish to no longer affect you. Do not however wallow in the depression it causes, at the first sign of that rubbish give yourself a slap and do one or the other.

I quite fancy going on a media fast, no tv, radio, papers, mags, for a month...just to see how programmed I am and what it's like to live without all that unproductive input. I already cancelled my Sky TV package, think I might go nuts with nothing at all mind you.

Do it.
It makes situations with other people uncomfortable, you start seeing the way people are controlled by the media they consume, the way people converse about whatever current media topic is current etc. People live in a box created by the media's choice of what happens to be important, it takes getting out of it in order to see just how small the box is and what's really important to you.
With your spare time, get A LOT of books and invest in yourself.
Be very careful about internet usage too. Avoid everything but the absolutely necessary. I'd also say ditching facebook is a good idea, it's just an unnecessary service people use to procrastinate on or seek the approval of others.

The news is ridiculously depressing and there's nothing you can do about a bomb thats gone off or a natural disaster save giving money to charity, which you will hear about anyway. The TV is a brain leech. I'd prefer to go out hunting and then make a fire.

Been no TV since July-ish. I never read papers and I don't listen to the radio or visit news websites. I had no idea what was going on in Egypt or any of those other places until I noticed rejoicing on a hanging TV in work a few weeks ago. It's all good,
Phil,
Haven't you written this subject before? And, what other options are there?
Peace,
kowalski
