I agree with EGOBOY that if you're really nervous about approaching to try a functional opener e.g. ask for the time, or better a situational opener, maybe comment on the weather. Whatever comes natural and seems most approapriate. The 3 second rule is there because the more you think, the harder it will be to appraoch.
However i disagree with EGOBOY's point about being 'reaction' focused. Because when you develop, to having a natural conversational after your approach, if you're focused on getting a reaction from her e.g. making her laugh, it can come across as needy or even creepy(depending on the situation and what you say).
It's rather like being outcome oriented, and being focused on a reaction can lead to this. When you're so focused on closing, wether it's just a k-close or whatever, a women can sense it, and in the end; it ends up ruining your game.
This is just my personal opinion, feel free if anyone wants to comment on it.
