Default Marriage - 27-01-2012, 03:55 PM

This is something that has been on my mind a lot of late. Does anyone see the point in getting married? Would you get married? I for one do not understand why some of my mates have either tied the knot or are about to. It's not something I've challenged them on, but I do wonder why they feel they have to. I've also seen a couple of ex-school colleagues on Facebook of late who have breached the same threshold, and I see them looking all proud next to their newly wed.

Call me cynical but sometimes when I see all the pics plastered up there I just can't help thinking they are all just trying to fit in, and are attempting to demonstrate to the doubters that they have 'made it'. Is this a genuine show of true love not just an orgy of self-indulgence, or are they even just trying to keep the girl happy? Maybe I should ask...

I would like to get married but I'm unsure why. Part of me thinks that if I have found a girl I am willing to bind myself with emotionally and legally then it must be the realy deal. Plus it's the security for both of us, you are more likely to try in troubled times when things don't come naturally and if one or the other should pass away or something should happen with them then they hold a better position in terms of insurance, inheritance, etc.

Liek you said it's probably social conditioning telling us that this is what we should do. Because it has been this way for so long the legal system and society has been built around it but slowly things are starting to change in allowing similar rights to unmarried couples...

I don't really get it either.
I once had 1 of my friends describe it to me that he didn't want to get married either but he did it because he wanted to give his girlfriend what she wanted. I thought that was the strangest thing I'd ever heard but a lot of girls believe in this Hollywood type of ending thing and get broody in their mid to late 30s...some much earlier.
Most of my friends have been with long term partners since school or university...maybe they thought they couldn't get anything else...I have no idea what makes people want to stay life long partners with the 1st person they went out with...

I personally don't plan on getting married, don't believe in it but there are tax advantages if later in life you have kids and things. I've only met a few girls who thought the same way though.

I'm not opposed to marriage, but I really don't see myself fitting into that form. Hell, I don't see most people as even being dating material, let alone marriage material. It's going to take someone to be damn impressive for me to even consider that.

He that is slow to believe anything and everything is of great understanding, for belief in one false principle is the beginning of all unwisdom.

I don't need the state or some church to recognize the fact I love someone.

Bollocks to it.
